Employers Like Chronological Resumes

Poll Results

In a recent poll, 78% of employers told us that they prefer chronological resumes to functional resumes.

Although functional resumes can really pinpoint and highlight a candidate's skills and goals in a favorable way, they tend to hide gaps in employment. A chronological resume can instantly show steady employment or at least offer an organized format to explain the gaps.

But it doesn't hurt for job seekers to have both types of resumes on hand. Even though employers appreciate a familiar read, online confidential resumes could benefit from a functional layout. Save a recruiter's time by providing a quick list of skills, achievements and experiences. Plenty of keywords will increase the chances of your resume popping up in the right employer's search. If they're interested, they'll ask for more.

Including a statement that says, "Full resume available with serious inquiries" is a great way to peak that interest, without advertising your job search.

If you go this route, be sure to have both types of resumes at the ready. Traditional resumes that employers are used to reading saves up-front time for them, helps them to make decisions faster and seems less risky to employers as they make hiring decisions.
